What does it take to send great birthday emails? We used MailCharts data to dive into the birthday email marketing campaigns of ecommerce brands to see which subject lines they're using, which birthday gifts their offering, and more. Here's what we learned:
Celebrate customers or rewards members with a gift or coupon
Outdoor clothing retailer, Columbia, provides a generous 20% off coupon for Greater Rewards members on their birthday. The only catch? Customers have to use it by a certain date. This email is also a great example of a company that follows best practices (it scored 100% on our email score which means it hits all the best-practices, too!).
In addition to fashion retailers, restaurants have a great opportunity to get customers back in the door on their birthday by providing freebies such as a dessert (for example, Uno) or a discount towards their next dinner, like Maggiano's does in their birthday emails.
Keep it simple
Promoting too many products within the email around a free gift can make it appear disingenuous. An example of a simplistic email is this one by fashion retailer, Saba. They use a clean design and straightforward message to celebrate their customers' special day.
You don't need to include a discount to have a successful birthday campaign.
Take a look at this email from FitBit, for example. On their customers' birthday, they send a fun email of which the subject line has a musical note emoji combined with a happy birthday line that's spelled as if someone is singing it. When opening the email, the subscriber sees an animated sparkling birthday cake, followed by tips for keeping healthy and active on their special day. They also show their subscribers how other FitBit users their age are doing when it comes to exercising and getting enough rest and conclude with a call-to-action for the birthday person to check out their own stats on the FitBit website.

Send more than one birthday email
If gifts or birthday discounts are part of your birthday email strategy consider sending more than one email. Iconjar all your icons in one place 2 1. Birchbox sends a series of three emails with a discount code that has an expiry date. The email shown here is the last of the three, sent three days after the subscriber's birthday. It reminds them to use the code before it inspires and emphasizes that they should treat themselves both with their call-to-action and with the 'To: me, from: me' card displayed in the email image.
Surprise customers with a mystery gift
Grove Collaborative surprises its customers with a mystery birthday gift that's waiting in the cart, ready to ship for free together with their next order. The combination of free shipping with a gift is a great incentive for the subscriber to buy something, but Grove Collaboration takes it even further. They are offering a free candle if the birthday person buys for more than $79, aiming for a higher transaction value per subscriber.
Also note how Grove Collection uses the subscriber's first name to personalize their email.
Ask for their birth date

Not sure when your subscribers have their birthday? Simply ask your email list, just like Nike does. Nike created an email with the sole purpose of collecting birth dates and the email subject line explains the benefits of sharing the birthday info. The email is short, simple, and contains a fun birthday-themed gif.
Send a half-birthday offer
Outdoor Voices has an unusual birthday strategy: they surprise their subscribers by sending them an email on their half-birthday. This short and fun email is sent 6 months before the subscriber's actual birthday and contains a $20 off discount code.
Use fun images and animated gifs

You can make an email more birthday party-like by adding fun images or animated gifs. The Art of Shaving sends this themed email with a 10% off discount code. We love the animated gif that has a gift box opening up to show an Art of Shaving product inside.

The gift is illustrative because the subscriber can use their birthday promo code on anything in The Art of Shaving's stores.
Include product recommendations with the birthday code
Consider adding links to the best-selling products to your birthday email and encourage customers to use the birthday discount. Timex uses an animated gif to show different best-selling products, and at the bottom, they provide personalized product recommendations based on the customer's browsing history.
Help subscribers send their birthday cards
Everyone loves receiving actual paper birthday mail but it's so easy to forget to send your cards on time. Postable knows this, and so they offer a service that lets you schedule all your birthday cards for an entire year. The animated GIF of a robot distributing birthday cards adds a fun touch to the email, which further down lists all the benefits of using the Postable service.
This email shows you don't even need to focus on your subscriber's birthday but can also tap into their desire to celebrate the birthday of those that matter to them.
Offer free shipping to treat others
Wolferman's Bakery offers subscribers free shipping if they decide to treat a birthday person in the month of March. The offer is put front and center at the top of the email, followed by deliciously looking purchase suggestions.
Totalfinder 1 11 4. Note how this email isn't even very personal: the subject line mentions it's time to celebrate March birthdays (and not just the recipient's birthday) and if the recipient doesn't know anyone who has a birthday that month, they can click the link to see Wolfman's Bakery suggestions for all-occasion gifts.
It's a great way to make birthday present suggestions and remind subscribers not to forget to get a birthday gift.
Don't just celebrate their birthday, celebrate their birth month

Hollister lets its subscribers celebrate for the entirety of their birthday month. Their subject line invites the recipient to 'party all month long' and the email body contains a 25% off unique discount code to use in their webshop and stores.
It's a simple email that places the birthday discount central and adds just a tiny bit of extra with a photo of a happy lady playing with fireworks sticks.
